TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH
#922 COLORADO with Marquez (-136) over LA Angels with Canning at 8:40 PM EST
After getting swept on the road by the Padres and with a day to iron out the kinks, the Rockies will return home on Friday and dominate this poor-traveling Angels bunch. At 20-23 straight up and 11.0-games back in the NL West, Colorado can’t afford home losses especially to a Halos team that is nine-games under the .500 mark.
Right-hander German Marquez will toe the rubber for Colorado. In his last start on the road at Los Angeles (Dodgers), No. 48 tossed a gem allowing only two earned runs and five hits in 7.0 innings. Marquez struck out five and walked three but failed to earn a decision in the Rocks 5-2 victory. Even though the won/loss record may not show it, German has been at his best under the lights this season. At night, Marquez has been scratched for only 15 earned runs and 36 hits in 37.0 frames. That equates to a soft 1-3 mark but a respectable 3.65 ERA.
Countering for manager Joe Madden’s Angels is righty Griffin Canning. In his last start at home against the ‘Stros, No. 47 wasn’t at his best allowing four earned runs and four hits in 4.0 frames. Canning whiffed four, walked two and served up one gopher ball in the Halos surprising 10-9 win. Overall, in eight outings this year, Griffin has been tagged for 20 earned runs and 39 hits in 39.7 innings. That adds up to a dismal 0-3 mark with a soft 4.54 ERA.
Plenty of solid angles line up on this investment. Colorado has won four of its last five when facing a sub .500 foe and 60 of its last 86 when priced as a home favorite. Meanwhile, on the other side of the yard, Los Angeles has hit the skids in 70 of its last 102 as a road pup, 20 of its last 28 coming off a win and 36 of its last 51 on foreign soil.
Off yesterday’s 6-2 victory at Texas, the Angels will have all kinds of trouble when they hit the Rockies altitude. Take Colorado with Marquez. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
