TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH
#915 NY YANKEES with Montgomery (+110) over Toronto with Ryu at 6:37 PM EST
In a really bad mood off three consecutive losses to the O’s, the Bronx Bombers will travel to Blue Jays country desperate for a win. New York is resting 6.5-games back in the AL East and they’ve got some serious work to do especially since two-thirds of the season is already finished.
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery will look to stop the bleeding for the Pinstripes. In his last three trips to the bump against the Devil Rays, Mets and Red Sox, No. 47 was scratched for seven earned runs and 13 hits in just 9.1 innings of work. Montgomery fanned 12 and walked only one batter on his way to an 0-1 mark and an elevated 6.75 ERA. Fortunately, Jordan has enjoyed a little success against the Jays. According to the History Book, Montgomery has appeared in four games versus Toronto (three starts) and assembled a nice 2-0 mark with a strong 2.33 ERA.
Hitting the hill for the home team will be left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu. It is noted that, in his last six starts, No. 99 was nipped for only five earned runs and 23 hits in 34.0 frames. Ryu whiffed 39 and walked eight on his way to a 3-0 record with a solid 1.32 ERA. Unfortunately, the Yanks have given Hyun-Jin fits. In a pair of starts against the Bronx Bombers, Ryu has completed only 10.1 innings and put together a disturbing 0-2 mark with an elevated 8.71 ERA.
There are plenty of reliable team trends that support this investment too. New York has won 41 of its last 60 on Monday, 65 of its last 96 against division foes and 17 of its last 21 after falling in five or six of its last seven games.
Ryu has been a dominant pitcher at home. That fact is noted. However, the Yankees are an angry team right now and that makes them a very dangerous underdog. Take New York with Montgomery. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
