TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH
#958 ATLANTA with Tomlin (-130) over Washington with Corbin at 1:10 PM EST
Off back-to-back losses to the Nats by finals of 10-4 and 10-9, the Braves will get back on track with a solid effort on Sunday. Atlanta’s lead in the NL East is down to just 2.0-games over Philadelphia and they can’t afford any more losses to a Washington squad that holds a dismal 14-24 mark.
Veteran right-hander Josh Tomlin will be on the bump for the home team on Sunday. In his last three starts against the Phillies (twice) and Nationals, No. 38 was nipped for nine earned runs and 17 hits in 11.1 innings of work. Tomlin fanned eight and issued three free passes on his way to an 0-2 mark and a lofty 7.15 ERA. Revenge will be on Josh’s mind for sure. In his August 18th performance against the defending World Series Champions, Tomlin limited the Nats to a pair of earned runs and six hits in 4.0 frames. Unfortunately, Josh failed to earn a decision in the Braves 8-5 loss.
Southpaw Patrick Corbin will counter for Washington. In his last four trips to the mound (all team losses for the Nationals), No. 46 was popped for 12 earned runs and 28 hits in 22.1 innings. Corbin whiffed 16, walked eight and served up four dongs en route to an ugly 0-3 mark and a weak 4.84 ERA. The road hasn’t been kind to Patrick either. On foreign soil, Corbin has been crunched for eight earned runs and 18 hits in 16.0 frames. After the math, that adds up to a 1-2 tally with a feeble 4.50 ERA.
There are a number of reliable angles that support this investment. Atlanta has won six of its last seven at home against a left-handed starter, 43 of its last 59 as a home favorite and 50 of its last 74 in its own backyard. On the other side of the yard, Washington has slipped in seven of its last eight coming off a win and 21 of its last 26 against a right-handed starter.
With almost two thirds of the shortened season completed and still on top in the division, the Braves understand the importance of winning their NL East home games. Take Atlanta with Tomlin. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
