Last year, SMU (-17’) hosted Texas State and the Mustangs drilled the Bobcats 47-17. Expect more of the same when the Ponies make the trek to San Marco, Texas on Saturday afternoon.
Getting out of the gate was high on SMU’s priority list in 2019 and they did exactly that by winning their first eight battles (6-2 ATS) and averaged an incredible 43.0 points per game. The Mustangs are led offensively by former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele and he is shining under the watchful eye of Ponies head coach Sonny Dykes. Last season, Buechele pitched it for 3,929 yards and 34 touchdowns and there is an excellent chance he will top those numbers in 2020. SMU returns four studs on the interior (Jaylon Thomas, Hayden Howerton, Alan Ali and Beau Morris) and they’ll do plenty to keep Shane safe and open up holes for the Mustangs rushing attack.
Fading Texas State won’t be a problem. Since 2015, the Bobcats have posted an ugly 13-47 SU and 19-33-3 ATS mark in their last 60 games including a woeful 10-20 SU and 7-17-1 ATS in their last 30 at home. In this run shagging +5.5 or more, TSU falls to a miserable 0-14 SU and 3-11 ATS. Please note: Those 14 losses came by an average of 24.4 points per game. Also, since 1990, game one home dogs priced at +17 or more have inked a pitiful 0-61 SU and 25-36 ATS record including a stiff 0-39 SU and 13-26 ATS provided they owned a team won/loss percentage of .180 or higher last year.
With a huge game scheduled for next Friday at TCU, Coach Dykes and the Mustangs will ramp their high-octane offense up and pile on the points and yards in this wire-to-wire roast. Take SMU. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
