TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION MONDAY, AUGUST 17TH
#960 CHICAGO with Gonzalez (-157) over Detroit with Boyd at 8:10 PM EST
With momentum off Sunday’s 7-3 home win over the Cardinals, the White Sox will have no trouble disposing of the Tigers under the Monday night lights. Chicago is 3.0-games back in the race for the AL Central crown and the Pale Hose can’t afford to fall to this dismal Detroit squad.
Taking the mound for the ChiSox will be veteran southpaw Gio Gonzalez. In three August starts against the Tigers, Brewers and Royals, No. 47 was scratched for six earned runs and 19 hits in 12.2 innings of work. Gonzalez fanned 11 and walked seven on his way to an 0-1 mark and a 4.27 ERA. Overall, spanning 13 years in the league, Gio has been solid on the bump surrendering 790 earned runs and 1,730 hits in 1,917.2 frames. After the math, that equates a career mark of 130-100 record with a reliable 3.71 ERA.
Struggling right-hander Matthew Boyd will get the nod for the Motor City Kitty’s. With four starts in the books this year, No. 48 has been smashed for 22 earned runs and 30 hits in 19.2 innings. Boyd has whiffed 18 and issued eight free passes on his way to a dismal 0-2 mark and a stiff 10.24 ERA. History won’t help Matthew here either. In his career, Boyd has made 15 starts against the Sox and assembled a timid 4-7 tally with a soft 5.08 ERA.
A multitude of elite angles support this Best Bet. Chicago has won 13 of the last 18 meetings in this series and seven of its last 10 against division foes. In comparison, Detroit has slipped in 38 of its last 55 in the first game of a series, 37 of its last 52 on foreign soil, 104 of its last 150 when facing a foe that scored five runs or more last and 74 of its last 103 when coming off a loss.
The White Sox aren’t happy about the way they’ve played in the Windy City posting losses in eight of their last 11. Matched up against a bottom-feeder like the Tigers, the Pale Hose know they need to dominate. Take Chicago with Gonzalez. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
