TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASEBALL SELECTION WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12TH

#907 OAKLAND with Bassitt (-108) over LA Angels with Canning at 4:10 PM EST
In a foul mood off yesterday’s 6-0 shutout road loss to the Halos, the Athletics will get back on track this afternoon with a solid effort inside Angel Stadium. Los Angeles enters this contest off back-to-back wins and manager Joe Maddon’s boys are ripe for a beating.

Toeing the rubber for Oakland will be right-hander Chris Bassitt. So far this season, No. 40 has faced the likes of the Astros, Mariners and Angels and been touched for two earned runs and 11 hits in 16.2 innings of work. Bassitt has struck out 15 and walked only four en route to a 1-0 record with a solid 1.08 ERA. Back on July 27th, Chris faced the Angels and he tossed a gem surrendering no earned runs and five hits in 4.0 frames. Bassitt fanned five and walked one but failed to earn a decision in the A’s 3-0 victory.

Young righty Griffin Canning gets the nod for the Halos. With three starts in 2020 completed versus the Rangers, Astros and Athletics, No. 47 has been nicked for five earned runs and 13 hits in just 14.1 innings. Canning has whiffed 16 and walked 19 on his way to an 0-2 tally with a 3.14 ERA. Griffin’s last three outings against the A’s haven’t gone that well at all. In 16.2 innings, Canning has been slapped for nine earned runs and 14 hits (four of which left the park). After the math, that equates to a 1-2 record and an elevated 4.86 ERA.

A number of quality angles support this Best Bet. Oakland has tasted victory in 27 of its last 36 after allowing five runs or more in its previous game, 29 of its last 39 when coming off a loss and 46 of its last 65 when favored. In comparison, Los Angeles has slipped in 36 of its last 52 overall, 26 of its last 37 against AL West foes, 38 of its last 53 as an underdog and 20 of its last 26 coming off a win.

The A’s lead in the division rests at 4.0-games over the Rangers and 4.5-games over the Astros. In order to keep that cushion, manager Bob Melvin’s kids know they must grab the “W” in this contest. Take Oakland with Bassitt. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
