TOM STRYKER’S FREE BASKETBALL SELECTION SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH
#786 MISSISSIPPI ST (-) over Vanderbilt at 8:30 PM EST
In a bad mood off that hard-fought eight-point loss at Kentucky and with a pair of road games at Ole Miss and Arkansas up next, Mississippi State will do a number at home on this overachieving Vanderbilt squad. The Commodores enter this SEC battle off a huge home upset win over LSU (+11.5 and won outright 99-90) and this will be a very difficult encore for head coach Jerry Stackhouse’s crew.
A quick peek at the History Book shows that MSU has been on fire in this series posting a sensational 23-7-2 ATS mark in the last 32 meetings. In addition, when running the floor inside Humphrey Coliseum off a straight up loss, the Bulldogs have been money in the bank notching a sensational 77-42-5 ATS mark in their last 124 games. In this situation going into revenge, head coach Ben Howland’s troops jump to a lucrative 31-11-2 ATS including 28-7-1 ATS if they are priced as a favorite or an underdog of +3 or less. Finally, in its last 35 games as an SEC host, MSU owns a respectable 24-11 SU and 24-9-2 ATS mark including 15-5 SU and 15-4-1 ATS if the Bulldogs were on the road last.
Kudos to the ‘Dores for knocking off the Bayou Bengals on Wednesday night. However, backing a Vandy squad that is a horrible 9-33 SU and 15-22-1 ATS in its last 42 games isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Even worse, in this run fighting a conference foe, the Commodores fall to a pitiful 1-27 SU and 10-18 ATS. Also, when coming off a straight up underdog win, Coach Stackhouse’s boys own a soft 36-49-1 ATS mark including a miserable 9-25 ATS in this set if they hit the hardwood off a victory of nine points or more. With those two parameters live and the ‘Dores priced as an underdog or a conference favorite of -7 or less, this team trend crashes to a nasty 4-22 ATS.
This is the only home game the Bulldogs will play between February 2nd and February 18th and Coach Howland will make sure his troops get the job done here. Take Mississippi State. Thanks and best of luck, Tom.
